The design removed the ill-suited utility and the isolated kitchen to create a new open-plan kitchen/dining with an unobstructed walkthrough to the playroom/snug. The new ground floor configuration not only increased the circulation space within the kitchen, permitting the client’s guests to freely socialise with the hosts as they cooked, but the free movement from snug to kitchen allows the adults to entertain while making sure the children aren’t getting up to too much mischief.
As a space for all the family, the incorporation of the large rear window and door, better connects the interior to the blossoming green space outside along with letting natural light permeate into this new open kitchen. The external timber cladding to the rear elevation, creates a distinctive aesthetic of the new structure allowing it to have its own voice to the original house and the surrounding landscape.
The mono-pitch structure of the side extension mirrors the existing outrigger to ensure the structure does not look out of place with the original house, while the large rooflight suspended in the ceiling provides a modern architectural feature that visually and physically expands the space further.
